Shepherd’s Pie

Reduce all the cookware involved in preparing Shepherd's Pie. With this recipe, all the ingredients are thrown into one casserole dish.

 

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb (450 g) lean ground beef 
  • 1 lb (450 g) mild Italian sausage
  • 2 teaspoons salt 
  • 3 tablespoons flour 
  • 2 teaspoons dried minced onion 
  • 1 tablespoon dried garlic flakes or 2 cloves garlic, sliced 
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce 
  • 1 large onion, diced 
  • 2 celery stalks, diced 
  • 1 can (796 ml or 27 oz) crushed tomatoes 
  • 3/4 cup breadcrumbs 
  • 2 teaspoons ground thyme 
  • 1 teaspoon red pepper flakes (omit if using hot Italian sausages)
  • 1 cup grated Parmesan or cheddar cheese 
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 500 g frozen potato pancakes or frozen, diced potatoes or frozen hashbrowns

Instructions:

  1. Place the ground beef in a casserole dish and seasonn with 1 teaspoon of salt. Add the Italian sausage removed from the casings. Using clean hands, break up the meat as much as possible. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F for 15 minutes.
  2. Take out of the oven and tilt the casserole dish and spoon out most of the excess liquid. Sprinkle the flour all over and mix while further cutting up any big meat chunks.
  3. Add the dried minced onion, garlic, milk, Worcestershire sauce, onion, celery and crushed tomatoes. Stir to combine.
  4. Add the breadcrumbs, thyme and red pepper flakes. Stir to combine.
  5. Add 1 teaspoon salt, cheese and the peas. Stir to combine and spread evenly throughout the dish. Top with the potatoes.
  6. Bake, uncovered, in a preheated 375°F oven for 30 minutes.
  7. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.
